Connecting a USB cash-drawer trigger
Set up a USB device that pops the physical cash drawer open automatically.
By the end of this article, the cash drawer pops open automatically on the events you choose.
What this connects to
This is for a USB cash-drawer trigger, either a bought adapter sold for that purpose or a homemade one. Either way, it shows up to Windows as a COM port, and its documentation specifies the trigger bytes it expects.
Configure it
- Open Settings and click the Store Settings card.
- Under Cash drawer kick, enter the COM port (for example
COM3) and the Trigger bytes (hex) from the device’s documentation. - Check Kick the drawer automatically on cash sales, Kick the drawer automatically on “No sale”, or both, depending on when you want it to fire.
- Click Test kick to confirm it opens the drawer before relying on it.
- Click Save settings.
This is separate from your receipt printer
The cash-drawer kick is configured on the Store Settings screen as its own COM-port device, not on the Receipt screen where the printer is chosen. The two are unrelated settings even if the same physical drawer sits under the same printer.
Opening the drawer without a sale
To pop the drawer to make change, without ringing up a sale, use No sale on the Cash Drawer screen rather than the printer or register. See Recording a pay-in or pay-out.
