Setting up a cash-discount or card-surcharge program
Configure the register to automatically discount cash sales or add a fee to card sales.
By the end of this article, the register applies a cash-discount or card-surcharge adjustment automatically at checkout.
Pick at most one of these programs, and confirm your state allows it before turning it on. Cash discount, which lists the card price and discounts cash payers, is legal everywhere. Surcharge, which lists the cash price and adds a fee for card, is regulated: it is banned in some states, generally capped around 4%, and card networks prohibit surcharging debit cards. Novella POS applies a flat merchant-set rate; it is not a compliance engine.
Turn it on
- Open Settings, click the Store Settings card, then scroll to Advanced settings and click Edit advanced settings.
- Confirm the warning to unlock the section.
- Under Cash discount / card surcharge, set Program to Cash discount or Card surcharge.
- Enter the Rate (%) the store wants to apply.
- Click Save settings.
With None selected, no adjustment is applied and prices are the same regardless of tender.
What the cashier sees
At checkout, the payment window shows both the card total and the cash total side by side, so the adjustment is visible before a tender is chosen. The register’s subtotal and tax also update once a tender is selected, since the adjustment is calculated before tax.
How it is labeled
On the receipt and in Sales History, the adjustment appears as its own line: Cash discount or Card surcharge, with the rate shown next to it.
