Closing out and reading the variance

Count the drawer at the end of a shift and see how it compares to what Novella POS expected.

By the end of this article, a drawer session is closed with its variance recorded.

What “expected” means

Novella POS calculates the expected amount in the drawer from the opening float, plus cash sales, plus pay-ins, minus pay-outs. This is the number your physical count gets compared against.

Close the drawer

  1. Count the cash in the drawer.
  2. Go to Settings > Cash Drawer and enter that count as the Counted amount under Close drawer.
  3. A Variance line appears as soon as you type an amount, showing the counted total minus the expected total.
  4. Add Notes if you want to record why a variance happened.
  5. Click Close drawer.

Reading the variance

A variance of $0.00 means the count matched exactly. A negative variance means less cash was counted than expected; a positive variance means more. Both are recorded on the session either way, nothing blocks closing out on a mismatch.
