Adding your first products and categories
Set up categories to organize the product grid, then add the products your register will sell.
By the end of this article, the register’s product grid has categories and products in it, ready to ring up a sale.
Add categories first
Categories group the product grid into the tabs a cashier taps through at the register. Set these up before adding products, so each product has somewhere to sit.
- Open Settings and click the Categories card.
- Under Add category, type a Name and a Sort order (lower numbers appear first).
- Click Add.
Repeat for each category the shop needs, such as departments or product types. A category can be edited or deleted later. Deleting one does not delete its products, it just leaves them uncategorized.
Add products
- Open Settings and click the Manage Products card.
- Under Add product, fill in:
- Name
- SKU (optional)
- Barcode (optional). Click into this field and scan the item; most scanners type the digits and hit Enter on their own, so it fills in without you typing anything.
- Category, or leave it as Uncategorized
- Price
- Click Add.
The product now appears both in the table above the form and in the register’s product grid, under whichever category tab you assigned it to.
Editing and removing products
Click Edit on any row in Manage products to change its name, SKU, barcode, category or price, then Save. Click Delete to remove a product entirely.
Products without a barcode still work at the register. They show up as tiles in the product grid and get tapped in rather than scanned, which is normal for made-to-order items like drinks or bakery items.
